COMMUNICATION
The reason I choose communication is because I believe that effective communication is key in successful organizations, establishing lasting relationships and family closeness. I have always loved to meet and learn about new people and the better your communication skills are, the easier it is to talk a wider range of people (diverse in culture, age , race, gender, social and political status). Your voice is a very powerful tool which can open and close doors with just one word and tone of how you say something may be just as important as the words you are saying. I learned that you can perfect this tool with constant practice, trial and error. Communication perspective focuses on reaching people though persuasive arguing to convince an audience to believe the message being delivered. Communication focuses on marketing and public relations and building interpersonal human relations.
SOCIOLOGY
The reason I selected sociology as my second concentration is because I like knowing the history of others so I can better understand them. Sociology is study of human social behavior, origins, organization, institutions, and how human society develops. It’s also an analysis of a social institution or societal segment as a self-contained entity or in relation to society as a whole. This discipline is very valuable to communication because it helps you gain a better understanding of others. Social structure or social activity sociology is the systematic study of human societies in order to provide a better way of life. Sociology is a broad discipline in terms of both methodology and subject matter. Traditionally sociology concentrations included social class, social relations, social interaction, religion, culture and deviance, and its approaches included both qualitative and quantitative research techniques.
INTEGRATION OF CONCENTRATIONS
Sociology and communications relate together because they are both social sciences that study people. They are interrelated and dependent on each other and one can exist without the other. Human social life depends upon the constant development and varied uses of modes of communication. Sociology depends on information that is represented in words, verbal communication and non-verbal communication to access human behaviors. In communication it’s important to have prior knowledge of others culture, gender and race and social class. The world of communication constantly changes and this change, to a large extent, depends on human action, human history and human behavior and technology or in other words sociology.
